Jean Van de Velde immediately made his presence
felt at just the second British Open appearance of

de Velde seemed to have the championship won with a
three-stroke lead. However, his third shot landed in
the deep rough to the right of the green and his
next shot went into the water. Jean Van de Velde
made a disastrous triple bogey forcing a three-man
playoff with Justin Leonard and eventual champion
Paul Lawrie. Van de Velde has been a prominent
member of the European Tour and now is a regular
member of the PGA Tour. Jean Van de Velde
represented France on 10 World Cup of Golf and seven
Alfred Dunhill Cup Teams, and holds the honor of
being the only Frenchman ever to compete in the
Ryder Cup.
