Southampton, Long Island, NY. Shinnecock Hills
hosted the U.S. Open four times in three different
centuries. Shinnecock Hills was founded in 1891 and
originally laid out by William Dunn Jr., with the
assistance of numerous members of the Shinnecock
Indian Nation tribe. It was one of the five clubs
which founded the United States Golf Association in
1894. Shinnecock Hills was redesigned by Charles B.
Macdonald and Seth Raynor in around 1916, retaining
five of Dunn's original holes, and redesigned again
by Howard C. Toomey and William S. Flynn in 1931,
retaining five of Macdonald and Raynor's holes and
the green of a sixth hole. Shinnecock Hills was
ranked second in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses
Ranking for 2007.
