The Masters Winner

Congratulations to Charles Schwartzel for winning the 2011 Masters. Schwartzel, the soft-spoken son of a former golfer was only playing the masters for a second time. Unlike other players in the field he remained unruffled and unleashed one of the greatest finishes in major championship history by birdieing each of the final four holes to win by two strokes.

The final round started with Rory Mcllory in the lead. Unfortunately, at the 10th hole his downfall began with a triple bogey, followed by subsequent bogeys that lead to a final score of 80.

Tiger was pushing hard with a 31 on the front nine causing everything to think he's back. Tigers back nine of 36 was more of what we have been seeing lately that has managed to see him fall short of the victories he always seemed to grab.

For a short period of time it seemed like anyone could win with much of field tied at -10. Then Adam Scott pulled ahead of the pack with a fabulous tee shot on 16 that lead to a birdie. However, Schwartzel continued to make birdies with a great finish on the final four holes pulling ahead of Scott by two strokes and winning the tournament.

The final round was full of suspense and excitement and could have not been scripted any better.

2011 Masters Week

PGA professional tournament activity and participation is at a peak leading up to Masters week beginning April, 4, 2010.

Today is the final day for the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Martin Laird is in the lead with a -11, followed by Spencer Levin -9 and Bubba Watson -7. With the exception of Bubba new names atop the leader board. Tiger, Phil, Ernie missing from the top.

Final warm-up and practice for players before Masters week the Shell Houston Open. Phil and Ernie on the list Tiger not present. According to Tim Dahlberg, AP Sports Columnist, Masters can't come soon enough for Tiger Woods.

Masters week practice rounds begin on Monday April 4th followed by the famous par 3 contest on Wednesday. ESPN has live coverage of the par 3 contest starting at 3:00PM on Wednesday.

Watney Wins Doral

Congratulation Nick Watney for your win at the Doral Cadillac Championship. Watney entered the final round behind third round leader Dustin Johnson and rallied to a 5 under par 67 to beat Johnson which gave him a third PGA tour championship. This victory was a redemption for him on the Blue Monster, where two years ago he battled Phil Mickelson until his 30 foot putt for a birdie on the last hole did not fall.

Dustin Johnson came up short again. Johnson, who had two victories in 2010 (Pebble Beach Pro Am and BMW Championship) just cannot seem to close the door and a big event victory. He plays a great game of golf, drives the ball a mile, but appears rushed when the pressure is on and makes mistakes. I believe this kid could be great with improved focus and calm.

Tiger played well at Doral. He matched his best score of the year with a 6 under 66 and tied for 10th place. I believe everyone would like to see Tiger rebound. Maybe this is the beginning. We'll keep the Tiger watch going waiting to see his performance at the Masters.

What happened to world number one Martin Kymer? Even though his finish was poor at four under, he appears safe at the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. Kymer started great with a 66 on the first day by closed on Sunday with a 74 after rinsing his ball in the water on the 18th hole.

Doral Cadillac Championship

The Doral Blue Monster, which claims the third-longest continuous service on the PGA Tour offering five decades of history, features the Cadillac Championship beginning this Thursday.

This year the Cadillac Championship decided to based the groups for the first two rounds on the world rankings. It's similar to what the European Tour did in Dubai last month and the U.S. Open did at Torrey Pines in 2008. This strategy puts Martin Kaymer, the new No. 1., in the same group with Lee Westwood and Match Play winner Luke Donald. However, the greater focus will be on the next batch of players - Graeme McDowell at No. 4, Woods and Mickelson.

Will Tiger end his drought this weekend in time for Augusta? Can Martin Kaymer prevail after loosing match play to Luke Donald at the Accenture World Championship? Or will one of the 26 young players under the age of 30, including two teenagers – lead the way? Can Ernie Els successfully defend his title?

The pgatour.com experts Tiger, Phil and Martin as 1, 2 and 3 with Graeme McDowell and Lee Westwood as 5 and six. No mention of Luke Donald or Ernie Els in the top ten.

This is a great field of players playing a tough golf course which lots of fun to watch.

Mickelson, Els Out Accenture World Championship

Yesterday two more of the veteran golf professionals were cut from the Accenture World Championship. Seventeen year old Matteo Manassero defeats Charl Schwartzel Lee Westwood looses to Nick Watney. Professional golfs youth is prevailing.

Phil Mickelson's match with Ricky Fowler ended on the 13th hole, which sent Phil to his worst loss ever in this event. Ricky Fowler, dressed in matching pink shoes and shirt was hot scoring 8 under par when the match ended on the 13th hole. Did Ricky's dress distract Phil?

Ernie Els was eliminated one-up by American J.B. Holmes, who only gained a spot in the 64-man field when South African Tim Clark withdrew with an elbow injury.

Major champions Kaymer and McDowell remain at what is becoming a very exciting event for golf professionals youth. Don't stop watching this event. Even though the names are not familiar the play should be great. Also, what will Ricky Fowler be wearing?

Woods, Poulter Out Accenture Championship

Is the youth movement in professional golf taking over at the Accenture World Championship? Seventeen year old Matteo Manassero beats Steve Stricker. When asked about the youth movement in golf, Rory McIlroy said all the young players feel they are good enough to compete with Woods, Mickelson, Stricker and Furyk. So far that seems to be whats happening, Mickelson is the only one left.

Tiger struggled from the start of his round. Overall his play was inconsistent and nowhere near the level of play he has demonstrated in the past. There were moments of brilliance, like his 8 foot birdie put on 18 to extend the match. The brilliance was followed by moment of ugliness when on the 19th hole he hit a 3-wood so far to the right that it landed in a desert bush, which took two shots just to get it back onto the grass. Woods conceded the match to Bjorn after he missed an 18 foot bogey putt on the 19th hole.

Tiger was visibly upset when he said, "It's easy to put the ball in the fairway and I couldn't even do that." Hank Haney Twittered, "For all the talk of Tiger's poor driving the last 6 years I have never seen him drive it out of play with a match or tournament on the line." What is happening to Tiger? Can he recover from the physical injuries and personal problems he has been dealing with? Let us have your comments.

Ian Poulter, the defending champion was also eliminated on the first day. Was this an upset because of poor play on the behalf of Poulter? Not really, Stewart Cink is a tough proven performer, having won tournaments and the British Open. The two were neck and neck all the way until the 19th hole when Cink made a great shot into the green that was inside four feet from the hole and resulted in a birdie. Poulter could not match Cinks birdie and the match was over.

A lot of top players remain in the tournament. Will youth prevail? Some names to watch, who I believe will contend and possibly be the last one standing:

Rory McIlroy
Lee Westwood
Martin Kaymer
Phil Mickelson

Round two today, already underway. Should be fun to watch.

Accenture Match Play 2011

The golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus takes advantage of the High Sonoran Desert setting to integrate strategy, variety and fair shot values into this Signature Design golf course at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.

The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain is his first Tucson golf course in 25 years, playing at elevations ranging from 2,300 to 3,200 feet. Nicklaus created 27 holes with unique challenges and distinct character, blending naturally among noble saguaros and the surrounding Tortolita Mountain Range.

The design mission for Jack Nicklaus while conceiving and building this golf course was to design a venue that would satisfy three distinct audiences:

The game’s best tour players, to compete in an elite championship
Guests of a world-class golf resort
Private golf club membership for a luxury golf community

His design has not only lived up to all expectations as host of the 2009 World Golf Championships-Accenture World Match Play Championship, but the course continues to capture the imagination of club members and guests alike. It is exactly what Nicklaus wanted.

Wednesday’s first round begins with a bang, the defending champ taking on a savvy veteran (Polulter vs Cink). Rumor has it Poulter was surprised with the 7:25AM starting tee time for the defending champ. Could be a chilly start without many fans.

The player most eyes will be on has got to be Tiger Woods, who is matched up with Thomas Bjorn for an 11:45 AM start time. When you look at Tiger’s record and the fact he has won this event three times, there is reason for Tiger fan optimism. However, with Tiger’s game still inconsistent, and Bjorn looking for any positive signs on his behalf, the memory of Tiger losing in the first round to Peter O’Malley in 2002 provides Bjorn hope. If Tiger prevails at the beginning of the championship, can he carry himself at a championship level until the end, or will he flop on Sunday as he did at the Omega Dubi Desert Classic?

The world’s number one, Lee Westwood, is scheduled to play Henrick Stenson at 12:05 PM. Westwood was supposed to play Toru Taniguchi in the first round who was replaced by Stenson due to injury. Westwood has struggled here in the past and could be knocked off by Stenson who is a former champion (2007).

Other top players to watch:

Mickelson – Should prevail in the first round
Els – Should prevail in first round, has enjoyed match play victories on European Tour
McDowell – Has had minimal impact at previous events, however easy competition during first round (Solcum), should move him to the second round

This should be an exciting event. Lots of top quality tour players, great golf course and another test for Tiger.

Omega Dubi Desert Classic

Tiger Woods is well in the hunt for his first title in 15 months at the Omega Dubi Desert Classic. Looking at the leaderboard Tiger is a -7 with a total of 209 and only one shot behind leaders Anders Hansen, Thomas Aiken and Rory McIlory. Tied with Tiger is Sergio Garcia and the world number one Lee Westwood is a -5 due to some unfortunate bogeys, and only two birdies during his third round. So Tiger has his work ahead of him to win his first title in 15 months.

Tiger insists his game is coming together and it is just a matter of time before he is in the winning circle again. We have all been waiting and wondering if one of the greatest golfers can and will ever return to his winning and form of the past. All great golfers, including the all time great Jack Nicklaus, have had winless periods.

So has Tiger just gone through a normal winless cycle, being the great golfer he is, or is he in a downward spiral due to his personal problems? Setting aside all of Tiger's swing changes, coach changes, etc, one ability he has had in the past is to focus and put himself "in the zone" when playing tournament golf.

This incredible ability Tiger and other champions have to focus and block out all distractions and negative mental thoughts is why champions are champions. There are a lot of people who can play a great game of golf, but when the pressure is on, such as a major golf tournament, they make poor decisions and careless mistakes. One of the most recent examples of loosing focus during championship golf was Dustin Johnson at the Pebble Beach U.S. Open where he went from three strokes up on Graeme McDowell to three strokes off the lead. Johnson carded triple bogey/double bogey/bogey on holes 2-4. He had lost focus, filled his mind with negative thoughts and could not recover.

Tiger appears to be hitting the ball well and on the winning trail. The Omega Dubi Desert Classic will certainly be a good early 2011 tournament test. To be the champion he has been in the past, I believe he will have to again be able to put himself "in the zone" again. Can he do that as successfully as he has in the past? I believe we would all like to see Tiger in the winning circle again. However, on the other hand it is nice to see new and different players in the champions circle.

Bubba Watson Wins Farmers

A battle of the lefty's until the finish. What happened to Bill Hass? Unfortunately, he finished the day with a 75 and finished 9th, tying with Brandt Snedeker.

Tiger, who many were hoping would make a comeback with his first appearance of 2011, was not to be heard from. Tiger also finished the day with a 75, tying for 44th with seven other players one with the name of Y.E. Yang, who beat him in 2009 in the US Open. Can Tiger recover?

Bubba, who was one group in front of Phil, made the clutch putts on the final two holes for a 5-under 67. Bubba's clutch putt for a birdie on 18 put him one shot ahead of Phil. Meanwhile Phil, apparently not aware of Bubba's birdie, decided to lay up on 18 and was lying three. Now Phil would have to hole out a wedge from 72 yards for a birdie and take the tournament into a playoff. Phil had his caddie tend the flag and took the shot. As usual whenever Phil hits the ball, the crowd held their breath, to watch the ball land just behind the hole and begin to spin back. Not enough spin, Phil is lying four and Bubba wins the tournament!

Great finish to a great tournament. Even greater seeing the new young golfers on top of the leader board and winning.

Farmers Insurance Open

Bill Hass, son of Jay Hass, and Phil Mickelson tied for lead at -11. Hunter Mann and Bubba Watson biting their heels at -10. Tiger Woods in middle of pack at -4, tied with John Daly. Mike Weir at the bottom at +4.

Can Bill Hass maintain his presence and cool to play a good round and win or will he loose to Phil or one of the other leaders? Does Phil continue to play safe as he did yesterday making eight pars and a birdie on the back nine for a 4-under 68. Phil playing safe not the norm, but according to Phil "This course doesn't reward for taking on any challenge."

Tiger Woods, who has not lost at Torry Pines in seven years, continues to struggle. Not only does Tiger continue to struggle, he does like to slam his club when shots go bad; can't hear what he says. Can Tiger recover????? I believe he will continue to struggle for some time to come and his return to the player he was at one time is very questionable. Anyone that plays golf knows you must have a clear mind and be able to focus to be successful. I believe Tiger will have a lot on his mind for some time to come. He should also consider a full time coach. The approach he is using now does not make sense. Also, why is he changing his swing again. Could it be physical limitations due to knee and/or other injuries????

If Phil does not win the Farmers Insurance Open, one of the new upcoming group of young golfers most likely will.

While the 2011 Regular Season started on Jan. 6, 2011 at Plantation Course in Kapalua, Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii. Some of us still buried in snow haven't even had a chance to find our golf clubs, practice, or play. Winter rules work under some conditions, but not blizzards. At least we can start to enjoy the new golf season on The Golf Channel or Sirius XM.

With the start of the Bob Hope Classic on Jan. 19th, taking place at La Quinta, California, a $5 Million purse up for grabs, and 500 FedEx points on the line, who will be victorious. As it stands right now Jhonattan Vegas is at the top of the Leaderboard, but 3 days can change a lot.

FedExCup

Dustin Johnson wins the BMW Championship, Charley Hoffman wins the Deutsche Bank Championship, Matt Kuchar wins The Barclays Championship! These same three guys are the top three leaders in the FedExCup playoff's. Ernie Els FedExCup standing dropped to number eight, Phil is number ten and Tiger is out of the race. The combined 2009 first place finishes for the three leaders of the FedExCup playoff leaders is two, yes two.

What a year of change and new names at the top. I believe this change is long overdue and great for the game of golf. We have been in aw of Tiger for a long time now, with Phil always nipping at his heels. It is good we are starting to focus on some new names.

Who will the final winner be? My money is on Dustin Johnson. Dustin Johnson has matured this year from some costly mistakes, two stroke penalty at the PGA Championship, and nerves on previous Sunday's resulting in lost strokes. Dustin hits the ball long and plays a great golf game.

The Barclays, August 26-29, 2010

The Barclays, being played at The Ridgewood Country Club Paramus, NJ, is the first PGA TOUR Playoff event of the FedExCup. This A.W. Tillinghast design is steeped in tradition as it has not only hosted significant golf events but also had one Byron Nelson on its professional staff as he was launching his playing career. Ridgewood Country Club played host to the 1935 Ryder Cup, the 1990 U.S. Senior Open, the 2001 Senior PGA Championship, and the 2008 Barclays. The 2008 Barclays was one of the most exciting Playoff events to date as it ended regulation play with three players tied atop the leaderboard at 8 under par an another eighteen players within three shots of the lead. The eventual champion Vijay Singh beat Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland in a dramatic sudden death playoff.

Players to Watch:

Ernie Els - "The Big Easy" currently leads in FedEx points. Overall he has had a good year, can he continue and win the FedExCup?
Steve Stricker - Always a solid player, currently second in FedEx points. Has one of the simplest swings on tour. Good stats should be in the running.
Jim Furyk - Third in FedEx points. Unfortunately, just disqualified because he overslept for the start of today's pro-am.
Phil Mickelson - Currently fourth in FedEx points. "Lefty" needs to regain the consistency he had to win the masters to win the Barclays.
Tiger Woods - Currently 112 in the FedEx points standings. Divorce just finalized. Can he get his game back. Watch him tee off 7:10AM Thursday.

The Ridgewood Country Club course is a special tournament course designed from a collection of the finest 18 of its 27 holes to accommodate the modern-day golfer. The course will play to a par of 71, stretching to 7,319 yards, forming a new Tillinghast course some 66 years after the classic designer’s death. The layout which puts a premium on ball striking will be a test of patience for the worlds best. To quote the great Jack Nicklaus—Youve got to play this golf course the way it dictates.

All eyes will be on Tiger. Unfortunately, if you want to watch him live on Thursday you will have to view him online at pgatour.com, TV coverage does not start until 3:00PM.

Tiger Woods Divorce Finalized

The somehow still No 1 ranked golf player in the world, Tiger Woods, finalizes his very expected divorce. After almost 6 years of marriage to Elin Nordegren, they were divorced on August 23, 2010 after Tiger's sex scandal and infidelity was revealed last Thanksgiving 2009. After the revelations of Tiger's sex scandal his personal life and professional life went into a downward tailspin. Playing some of the worst golf ever in his career and no major wins, it is now questionable whether or not Tiger will ever beat Jack Nicklaus' record wins.

Tiger and Elin have asked for their privacy, wished the other well, and want to focus on what's best for their two children Sam Alexis 3 and Charlie Exel 1. No details of the divorce settlement are being disclosed, but it is being speculated that Elin will receive $100 - $150 million and they will share custody of their children.

With all this in what should be the past, will Tiger ever be able to return to greatness or beat Nicklaus' record? With Woods scheduled to play at The Barclays this week, it will be his first tournament as a single man. Will he be able to play well enough to get past the first round at the FedEx Cup playoffs, a tournament he has been victorious in the last two times he played, or will he miss the cut? The Barclays is also important in showing his value to be picked for the Ryder Cup. Let's hope this ends a bad chapter in his career and he can move on to play well. I don't know if Tiger will ever be the player he used to be, but am still slightly excited at the prospect of a comeback.

Martin Kaymer wins 2010 PGA Championship

Congratulations to Martin Kaymer who won the PGA championship at Whistling Straits in a three-hole playoff over Bubba Watson. The playoff would have also included Dustin Johnson, before he received a two shot penalty for grounding his club in a bunker, that should have been considered a waste area. Martin Kymer winning is not a surprise. I watched him in the British Open, and commented in a previous blog entry. He is a young strong golfer with a great swing. At the British Open he missed a lot of putts. Apparently he has fixed that problem. Watch for more of Martin Kymer in the future.

As far as Tiger and Phil are concerned, I believe their futures are questionable. They are growing older and have numerous health issues. The 2010 PGA Championship was dominated by younger golfers. I believe that is the future.

Will Tiger Make the Cut?

Will Tiger make the cut at Whistling Straits? He is currently at -1 and the projected cut line is +1.

Through six holes of his second round he is even. From what I saw even was fortunate and could have easily been over par. His ball striking is still inconsistent and his temper seems tight. Slamming a club into the ground does not improve your swing. I've tried it and it doesn't work.

Weather looks good for Saturday, so that should help. It will be interesting to watch the performance of the World's Number One Golfer.

92nd PGA Championship at Whistling Straits

Who will win this years 92nd PGA Championship held at Whistling Straits, Kohler, Wisconsin. It is a Major all players stive and struggle to win. The Straits Course located on Lake Michigan is considered one of the most brutishly tough courses in the country with similar conditions to an Irish links course. Whistling Straits is ranked No. 68 on Golf Magazine's Top 100 Courses You Can Play plaque. The designer, Pete Dye, has laid out the course with bunkers, streams, gigantic man-made dunes, and a mostly blind green on the par 3, 183-yard, 13th hole. As if the course does not have enough of it's own challange, mother nature may just add in a whistling wind to add to the difficulty and beauty.

The players are many, but who will be left holding the prized cup? Will last years Champion Y.E. Yang be able to pull it off again, or will it be another chance for Phil Mickelson or Vijay Singh to be victorious. Maybe this will be the tournament that brings Tiger Woods back. Will one of the young, bright, new stars on the course like Rickie Fowler or Rory McIlroy be our next PGA Champion. It's going to be an exciting tournament with so many different players, all wanting to be the best.

Louis Oosthuizen Wins

Louis Oosthuizen becomes the fourth South African golfer to win a British Open. He joined the four-time winner Bobby Locke, the three-time winner Gary Player and the 2002 champion Ernie Els. A relative unknown maintains his cool, swing tempo and resilience to conquer the Open at the St Andrews Old Course. Odds-makers put Oosthuizen at 200 to 1.

His closest contender, Paul Casey, presented a challenge until the 12th hole triple bogey which made a come back difficult. Oosthuizen's ninth hole eagle, after driving the green should have been fair warning to Casey, this is not going to be easy.

Watching these young new players lead the field has got to be great for golf. Oosthuizen is one of several that displayed a great game of golf at St Andrews. I could not help but notice Martin Kaymer of Germany who tied for seventh place. Kaymer, who has a great swing, could have easily been a contender if he improves his putting.

Could this be the beginning of a shift in golf Major victories? Having a few professional golfers always lead the field is not good.

While sitting in my air conditioned home yesterday to avoid the sweltering 97 degree outside, watching the cool windy British Open in Scotland is joyful from both a golfer standpoint and temperature standpoint. Even if I couldn't get to Scotland in time to watch the British Open, I'm ready to go for the cool weather.

Tiger continues to struggle, Phil is out of the race and a young man Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa enters the final round of the British Open at St. Andrews with his first major title in sight. At 15 under par, Oosthuizen also can match Tiger Woods' record of 19 under set in 2000.

Paul Casey of England is Oosthuizen's closest pursuer, at 11 under par, with Westwood, Stenson and Kaymer not far behind. Are we seeing the beginning of new leaders on top for golf's major events? Seeing new leaders and winners on top I believe is good for the game. Tiger is great to watch and the fans love Phil, but they should not always be the leaders and winners.

Well back to the TV to catch up with what is going on and imagine the cool breezes of Scotland as the temperature outside begins to exceed 94. I certainly do love my Direct TV International View which is commercial free and provides great coverage.
